Appendix A - Network Analysis/Scheduling

Safran Project User Guide
v1
English
Network Analysis/Scheduling Safran Project uses the Critical Path Method to calculate activity dates. This method is based on estimated activity durations and logical relationships between the activities. Project logic may not reflect all conditions; sometimes, you must impose constraints on specific dates. You can constrain certain activities, affecting how Safran Project calculates activity dates and links. Logic One of the key elements of modeling project work is the ability to link activities using different types of relationships or constraints logically. The constraint type specifies the relationship between the preceding and succeeding activity. There are four types of constraints: Finish to Start Link (FS) The start of an activity depends on the finish of the preceding one. Activity B may not start until Activity A has finished. Start to Start Link (SS) The activity may not start until the preceding activity has started. Activity B may not start until Activity …

Progress Summary Report

Safran Project User Guide
v1
English
The Progress Summary Report The Progress Summary Report is a project status report based on critical performance measurement and comparison data. You can choose to show cost, quantity, or manhours data, and you can present data at a detailed activity level or summarize for project phases, discipline OBS, WBS, or the entire project. The Progress Summary Report is many organizations' most highly valued status and performance report. The Progress Summary Report is used for evaluating your project's performance, which is measured and compared on a periodic and cumulative basis according to units of QTY or Cost. Earned value is calculated by multiplying Percent Complete by the Budget. Configuring the Progress Summary Report The Progress Summary Report is feature-rich. The configuration pane uses the standard Safran reports setup—a tab-divided interface with a Titles tab, Filter tab, Report Tab, Fields tab, and a Resources tab. This chapter will …

identify if your schedule contains any activities with more than one date constraint, you may run the XER Export Check . High Float An activity with high float may result from wrong or missing logic. If the number of activities with high float is excessive, this may indicate that the project is unstable or not logic-driven. On the other hand, if the logic is sound, a path with a high float may suggest that extra work can be added to accelerate work, given that the resources to complete the work are available during this period. Negative float Activities with negative float should have an explanation and a corrective action plan. Ideally, there should not be any negative float in the schedule. High Duration The schedule should realistically reflect how long each activity would take to execute. These durations should be as short as possible. They should be manageable, meaning you …

Calculations

Safran Project User Guide

English
Calculation The calculation options in Safran Project provide powerful and user-friendly tools for changing/updating large amounts of information in your project. You may assign various calculations to the entire plan or a selected group within your plan. Global Change - Assign Fields The Assign Fields feature is a powerful tool that lets you change data for some or all activities in a single process. The Assign Fields feature can be accessed from the HOME ribbon or by right-clicking in the barchart area. You can do several things with the global Assign Fields option: compute fields, remove item values, replace data, use date arithmetic, and assign or change text and data strings. The 'assign field' specification includes a change statement and selection criteria. The selection criteria are either entered as a filter, or you may specify to run the change and update for selected rows. To globally change the …

schedule. This process is called Resource Leveling. Resource Leveling is an automated process in Safran Project and delays the start of specific activities to when the resources are available while still meeting the plan’s logical constraints. Your project schedule is dynamic: whenever you change activities or logic, Safran Project recalculates the schedule incorporating these changes. Safran Project allows you to modify the default schedule options. In most cases, the default configuration should be sufficient. If this is not the case, it is easy to reconfigure the network analysis. You may modify the default options that the time analysis process uses. This may be done at any time before calculating the project schedule. The various options and their effect on the calculations are discussed in the table below: Field Description Duration Stretch* Specify whether the analysis process may stretch an activity duration. The default is No Stretch. (See comment 1 …

Filters Selecting Data (Filter) While working as the Barchart Editor, Safran Planner provides two features for narrowing down the number of activities presented. Applying a ' Normal Filter' Using 'Auto-Filter' on displayed columns Specifying Activity Selection Criteria To select a data group, you must specify criteria that are familiar to all the entries in the group. Your selection criteria can be saved as named filters for later reuse. By choosing Filters from the HOME toolbar, you are given a window to select the activities to appear in the Barchart Editor. If no selection criteria are entered, all activities in the project are included. Create a new filter Selection criteria and filter expressions may get complicated and cumbersome to enter, so you may find it helpful to name and store your expressions for future use. To create a new filter, click on the 'Filters ' icon. Click 'New...' Type in a filter …

horizontal or vertical. Vertical curtains span from one date to another and can highlight essential periods in the project lifespan, such as construction or non-working periods. Horizontal curtains span between values on the left axis. Entries Edit the data you want to report on. This window is divided into Periodic Bars, Cumulative Lines and Table Entries. You can remove or add lines in every section. Every section has four tabs to their right: Main, Layout, Scope and Rates (only active if you use complex rates). It is worth exploring the entries panel to understand the available options fully. By default, the values of the periodic bars are displayed on the left axis, and the values of the cumulative entries are displayed on the right axis. This is configurable, but the default setup is an accepted standard. By default, the report is set up with 'Live Plan, Early' as the …

organizations the Safran System Administrator has the ability to nominate default libraries when creating a new project. Even if this is the case you are still allowed to select another library from the dropdown list box. At the top of each dropdown list you’ll find a ‘New’ value. If you choose this value, Safran will create a new library set that will be empty and will be given a default name derived from the Name of your project. You will have the ability to add to these sets as part of the wizard. There are only a few things that you have to consider. Start by giving your project a Name and a Description for your project. These two attributes will be readily available as header information for all layout and report configurations. You'll also need to make the correct selection of the 'lowest duration units' before you …

XER Export Checks When exporting a project to Primavera P6 it is a good idea to run a ‘Health Check’ on your schedule information prior to running the export. Even though Safran Project and Primavera P6 are both planning and scheduling systems based on the Critical Path Method, the systems do have slightly different philosophies and functionalities. Safran Project allows you to run a quick check of your network/schedule data and provides you with a list of any issues that might cause trouble or inconsistencies in P6. By running the check prior to exporting, you have the opportunity to correct or remove any Safran information that is …

worksheet. Example of a Progress & Expended Import file qualified with 'Net_ID': Including the field Net_id is, in fact, not mandatory, as Safran will produce error messages as part of its validation process if the same Activity ID exists in more than one project. If your import file contains one or more non-ambiguous activity IDs, you will still be allowed to import this information; however, the ambiguous activity ID information will not be saved. The Statistics from the saved progress and expended above show that 33 activity lines had errors, i.e., ambiguous Activity IDs due to not including the Net_id field to qualify the information. Four activities did have unique Activity IDs and were therefore saved/updated. Status Updates When working with a large number of projects in a Master Project, particularly in cases where some projects are complete/historical and not normally updated, entering each …

The Bull’s-eye Chart The Bull’s-eye Chart plots the cut-offs (status periods) in a CPI - SPI matrix. There are four quadrants to this chart: Behind Schedule Over Budget Behind Schedule Under Budget Ahead of Schedule Under Budget Ahead of Schedule Over Budget. The Bull’s-eye chart lets you quickly determine if your project is ahead/behind schedule and over/under budget and monitor its trending. The above illustration shows the four quadrant areas that form the Bull’s-eye Chart. The upper right quadrant is considered the most favorable. The bull’s-eye report can also be drawn using the performance factor (the inverse of the CPI and SPI values). If so, the lower left corner becomes the most favorable. Below is an example from Safran Project: Configuring the Bull’s-eye Chart The Bull’s-eye Chart configuration pane contains four tabs. The Titles …

Reports and Graphics - Preparing, Viewing and Printing This chapter lists the different report types available in Safran Project. As an introduction, features that are common to the report types listed under the report menu options are briefly discussed in this chapter. Specific details about each format are discussed in the sections for each report type. This chapter should be studied with the sections concerning the different report formats and available report types. One of the primary purposes of a project control system is to provide relevant, precise, and timely information. To do this, a wide range of reports and charts must be available so that the best and most appropriate display can be used to pinpoint and highlight any particular piece of information. Additionally, it should be easy to switch between different display styles and layouts and be under complete user control, not predefined and rigid. To make the right …

Change Control

Safran Project Basic Training Course

Change Control One of the few certainties in a project is that there will be changes. Tracking changes to the baseline plan and the baseline scope of work is a key aspect of project control. Controlling the scope of work Safran Project allows you to set a baseline scope of work at project initiation. You can make changes in scope – all modifications involving resources, quantities and cost – through a change control process. In addition to the Baseline scope, there is a Current scope and Total scope available. By default, the Current scope represents the currently approved scope (baseline scope + scope approved by the customer), and the Total scope represents all known scope, including estimates, whether authorised or not. All sets of scope are configurable from the Project Setup screen. You can specify what changes are included in what scope and when they should be updated (e.g. at baseline or …

Using the Safran System Administration Tool

Safran System Administration Tool

Using the Safran System Administration tool The Safran System Administration Tool (Sysadm) initiates and maintains your Safran Project database. A database and at least one user with administrator privileges are needed to use System Administration. This user should be named safransa. Creating databases (and schemes in Oracle) is usually among the tasks the IS department considers their domain. Therefore, we recommend contacting your IS department and working closely with them. When you are ready to install Safran Project or Safran Planner, follow the steps described in the Installation guide. The database file is part of the installation if you run a Safran Project Personal edition with MS SQL Local DB. It is already configured with a DBA user, and the Sysadm application can be utilised after the software has been installed. Starting the Safran System Administration tool Depending on your installation, there are three ways to start the Safran System …
