Resource Leveling

In Safran Project, the first step towards resource leveling is defining the availability of project resources (for the Resource Set associated with the current project). This crucial step enables you to use Safran Project for resource leveling effectively.

When it comes to defining resource availability, Safran Project offers flexibility. You can go to PROJECT > Resource > Available Resources and determine the availability of resources as pure Qty (per day) or Manpower by using the Qty Mode button. This flexibility allows you to implement different resource management strategies.

  • In the Available Resources window, click 'New'.
  • Select the appropriate resource from the list. You can add the same resource several times, to create a profile that changes availability over time.
  • Set the 'available from' and 'available until' dates.
  • Enter the QTY or Manpower available for the resource.
  • Set calendar, if needed.

Resource leveling can be used in two ways within Safran Project:

  • In a histogram, show resource availability compared with your scheduled resource requirements.
  • To create a more realistic schedule.

After you have defined the resource availability and created a plan, Safran Project can create a schedule based on resource availability. Select PROJECT > Properties > Schedule Options tab. In the Resource Leveling section, you can choose either Time Limit or Resource Limit:

Time Limit aims to finish the work on time, although some activities will be in resource overload. After scheduling, you can determine from the overloads what extra resources you need to put in place to finish on time.

With resource Limit, you are in control. Safran Project assumes the resource limit is non-negotiable. Suppose an activity can't be completed on the early dates due to resource limits. In that case, the activity will be delayed until the resource availability matches the requirement, extending the finish dates of the activity and most likely the project.

Depending on your choice, you can limit how much overload or delay you will accept in the analysis.

Rest assured, Safran Project provides several reports, including the Editor Histogram and the Histogram/S-Curve, that visually represent availabilities. These reports show a line indicating the available resources at any given time, providing a quick visual check for any potential overloads.
